On November 4, 2025, two Chinese men, Wang Bochuan (27) and Xu Zilan (24), allegedly sexually assaulted a woman at a hotel at 23 Tai Nan Street in Mongkok, Hong Kong. After the woman reported the incident to the police, the Hong Kong police intervened and arrested the men, who were not required to defend themselves when they were first arraigned at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court in mid-November. The magistrate adjourned the case to January 5, 2026, pending further investigation, during which time both defendants were not released on bail and remain on remand.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is learnt that both defendants came to Hong Kong on two-way exit permits issued by the Mainland of China. The prosecution alleged that in the early hours of November 4, they were suspected to have jointly raped a woman in the said hotel room in Mongkok. They were charged with one count of rape immediately after their arrest and were first brought before the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court on November 10 (Case No. WKCC5043\/2025).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To date, the court has not granted bail to the two men, so they will remain on remand until the next hearing on January 5, 2026, when they will be released on bail. The case has attracted a great deal of attention in both the Hong Kong and Mainland currency communities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On November 18, 2025, cryptocurrency industry insider Jennifer Lam (formerly the head of HashKey's Hong Kong business) opened up some new information about this case on X. In order to protect privacy, the family has asked the media to withhold the real names and photos of the two women. According to Jennifer, she was asked by the family of one of the suspects on November 6 to accompany the family to Hong Kong from the Mainland to report the case to the police, and after reporting the case to the Hong Kong police, she confirmed that the two men were being detained by the police and were cooperating with the police in their investigations. Jennifer later elaborated on the matter on social media, revealing that the case has entered the police investigation process. She emphasized that the police investigation is not yet complete and the case is not yet finalized. Both suspects, Wang Bochuan and Xu Zilan, have worked in the cryptocurrency industry and are also business development employees of MetaEra Media. According to public information, Wang has an extensive background in the cryptocurrency industry, having worked for a number of crypto-related organizations, including as a community manager for the Hotcoin exchange, as well as in the cryptocurrency department of the WEEX trading platform and the growth department of the HashKey Group. Mr. Wang received his Master of Laws degree from the East China University of Political Science and Law in 2025 and has a background in higher education in law.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to the case, Wang Bochuan worked as a BD at MetaEra, and Xu Zilan joined MetaEra as a BD. As for Xu Zi Lan, it was reported that he interned at Bitget before joining the MetaEra team as a BD, but insiders revealed that Xu Zi Lan was fired from MetaEra for alleged sexual harassment. This means that Xu had already left MetaEra prior to the incident due to prior criminal convictions, and although neither of the suspects is currently an employee of MetaEra, the case has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency community due to their backgrounds with the cryptocurrency media company.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The family and the industry have very different views on this incident. Family members are inclined to believe that there is a possibility that the case is being set up, and suspect that the whole incident may be a so-called \"fairy jumper\" (seduction and extortion) conspiracy. Through Jennifer Lam, a family member of one of the men said that the legal team has already started to prepare counter-measures and may file a counter-suit against the accuser for extortion in the future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
